WordPress
Use for blogging or as a content management system on a website where it's important for non-programmers to add new content easily. The basic package doesn't require programming or html skills to create and maintain a functioning site (they aren't kidding about the 5-minute installation process), and there are hundreds of free templates available. WordPress can be extended by adding functionality to the core system with plugins.
Drupal
Good for interactive web sites where many users may post content. Lots of add-ons, plugins and themes available, but even a bare-bones setup seems to require much more administration and maintenance than a basic WordPress site. PioneerValley.info started out in Drupal but I eventually moved it to WordPress because of this.
Joomla
Another popular open-source platform for blogging or content management.

An open source system designed especially for nonprofits to aid in contact management and development campaigns. Due to the importance of the information it tracks, an organization should have at least one staff person dedicated to configuring and maintaining the system, and others able to do at least basic maintenance and back-ups.

Tutorials and online manual. The comments in each section frequently include code snippets contributed by users (which may or may not be useful).
MAMP
MAMP stands for “Macintosh, Apache, Mysql and PHP.” The MAMP website offers a free download of the open source MAMP package, which allows Mac users to set up a local server environment on their computer and test their PHP/MySQL applications before going live. LAMP and WAMP are similar open-source packages for Linux and Windows. XAMPP has multiple versions for various operating systems.
